Transcript

When asthma flares up, the bronchial tubes in the lungs narrow, making it difficult for air to pass through them. The tubes themselves may become inflamed and swollen, and the smooth muscles around the outside of the tubes may tighten. The mucous membrane lining in the tubes begins to produce a thick mucus, which builds up and blocks the airways.
